How to Program a Garage Door Remote (LiftMaster, Genie, Chamberlain)

Step-by-step instructions to program any garage door remote to any opener in under 60 seconds — works for all major brands.

How do I program a garage door remote?

Every modern opener uses the same basic process: find the LEARN button on the back of the opener motor, press and release it (don't hold), then within 30 seconds press the button on the remote you want to program. The opener light will blink to confirm.

LEARN button colors by brand and year: LiftMaster/Chamberlain — purple (1993–1997), green (1997–2005), orange/red (2005–2011), yellow (2011–present). Genie — square red or round red. Craftsman — same color as their matching Chamberlain era.

If your opener is pre-1993 with a row of dip switches instead of a learn button, set the dip switches inside the remote to the exact same up/down pattern as the dip switches inside the opener. Easy fix.

If the remote programs but won't trigger the door later, the receiver in the opener may be failing. Universal external receivers (about $40) plug in and add fresh remote-programming capability to any opener.

Key takeaways

  • Press LEARN, then press remote within 30 seconds
  • Yellow LEARN = LiftMaster 2011+ (Security 2.0)
  • Pre-1993 dip-switch remotes: just match the pattern
  • Failing receiver? $40 universal receiver fixes it
